Dr. Muhammad Rafiqul Islam is an Assistant Professor of Medical Oncology and an accomplished clinical researcher in Bangladesh, with a distinguished career dedicated to advancing precision oncology and handling complex, challenging care and tertiary referral cases. After earning his MBBS from Sir Salimullah Medical College in 2004, he joined the 27th Bangladesh Civil Service (Health Cadre) in 2008 and completed extensive postgraduate training in Internal Medicine prior to specializing in Medical Oncology at the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH). He earned his MD in Medical Oncology with distinction in 2017 and joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2018. Over the course of his practice since 2015, Dr. Islam has delivered compassionate, comprehensive care to more than 35,000 patients with cancer.
To complement his solid clinical foundation, Dr. Islam pursued elite international clinical and academic training to bring global expertise back to his home country. He completed advanced clinical fellowships at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai under Prof. Sudeep Gupta, alongside specialized palliative care training under Professors Cynthia Goh and Sushma Bhatnagar. In 2023, he was awarded a prestigious GEO Health scholarship to earn a Master’s degree in Precision Health and complete postdoctoral training in Precision Oncology at the University of Chicago. Returning to Bangladesh in September 2025, he has focused on translating cutting-edge developments in genomics, artificial intelligence, and precision medicine into practical, accessible solutions for underserved populations.

In his clinical practice, Dr. Islam delivers advanced, evidence-based precision care for complex and late-stage malignancies, seamlessly integrating next-generation modalities—including molecularly targeted therapies, next-line immunotherapies, tailored chemo-immunotherapy combinations, biomarker-driven hormone therapies, supportive care, and specialized palliative medicine. He possesses extensive expertise in managing high-acuity oncologic emergencies and severe treatment-related toxicities, such as febrile neutropenia, multi-organ toxicities, acute infusion reactions, and complex immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Utilizing a sophisticated, multidisciplinary approach, he specializes in navigating refractory, high-risk, and tertiary referral cases across diverse solid tumors—including advanced lung, breast, ovarian, colorectal, gastric, and hepatobiliary cancers—aiming to optimize disease control, extend overall survival, and preserve functional quality of life throughout every phase of the advanced cancer journey.

Dr. Islam is an internationally recognized researcher and leader in artificial intelligence, precision oncology, and cancer genomics, with over 30 peer-reviewed publications and numerous global accolades. His achievements include the ESMO 2019 First Prize Poster Award (Asia Region) for female lung cancer research, the 2020 ASCO IDEA Fellowship, and active research collaborations with premier institutions like the Mayo Clinic and the University of Chicago. Beyond his research, he holds significant global leadership roles, serving as Co-Chair of the IASLC Artificial Intelligence Task Force, a member of the ASCO Global Guideline Advisory Group, a Guideline Development Group Member for the WHO Global Breast Cancer Initiative, and joint Secretary of the Medical Oncology Society of Bangladesh.
